Assistive technology landscape in Africa

This report presents a consolidated, evidence-based overview of the AT landscape in Africa, with a particular focus on young persons with disabilities. Drawing on a systematic synthesis of 523 sources, including peer-reviewed research, policy documents, organizational websites, and contextual materials, the report examines AT access, policy environments,
market dynamics, and manufacturing and innovation ecosystems across all 54 African countries. It also offers strategic recommendations to strengthen AT systems on the continent and to expand inclusive youth employment pathways. The findings highlight the critical importance of coordinated systems, inclusive service delivery models, robust data and evidence, and inclusive youth participation in shaping responsive and sustainable AT ecosystems. This report reflects the integration of rigorous evidence and the collective expertise of the authors and project team in addressing the objectives defined by the Mastercard Foundation.
